Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Missing Content

If you're viewing this page, you probably already know what KOTOR2 is about (and have very likely beaten it by now), so I'll keep it brief. After beating the game, Aurora (a poster on the Obsidian Entertainment forums) dug in the files for the KOTOR2 PC version and found many scripted events that didn't make it into the game. Many of these scenes seem intended for character development (especially in the case of Mandalore and Atton), but there were also scripts for a "new" (many would argue "better") end sequence in which several characters could (and did) die to aid the main character, the Exile.

The amazing thing is that most of these cutscenes were recorded - and these sound clips were included with the other files in the PC release. As of 2/23, I don't know if the files can also be found on the Xbox version, but I'd guess it's pretty likely.

Aurora started this thread on 2/13, and people ran with it from there, finding other dialogues and scenes. The general consensus is that Obsidian intended to put all of the content in the game (one bit of evidence cited is found on the official website, where you can click on "game info", then "diaries", "diary IV", then the Voiceover Audio Trailer, to hear several lines from the "missing" dialogue), but there's a lot of speculation on why the content was cut. To put it in broad strokes, people think Obsidian ran out of development time (and/or money), or that there were objections about the mature content of the scenes (perhaps at the last minute). Anyone who knows for sure is almost certainly contractually bound not to say anything.

Update 3/6/2005: The original thread has since been closed. Aurora started a new thread to track any additional content found since then.

So that people don't have to wade through a 28 page thread, this page was created as a compilation of everything people found. I don't think it needs to be said that there be SPOILERS ahead, and dragons, and other scary stuff. Send your thanks to Aurora, who found the scripts and started the thread.

General notes:

There are two ways to listen to the sound files, located in the Kotor2/Streamvoice directory:

1) Get the Miles sound tools here and use the player to, well, play them. (advice posted by Objulen and Aurora)

2) rename all the *.wav to .mp3 and listen in your player of choice. (advice from Cthugha)

Speculation and insight on the missing content:

About Remote and G0T0 - posted by Camicortes

"OOk. Got it. Wanna know what was really intended to happen in that final scene in Malachor V with Remote and G0-T0 in it? Our beloved assassin droid was supposed to save the day! Yes, in the StreamVoice\901\sensorfi folder of your game, several audio files indicate that just when poor little Remote was going to be terminated by "the fat-one", HK-47 jumped in scene to stop him. G0-T0 had some aces up its sleeve, too, as a bunch of HK-51 droids were there to protect him from -47. Nevertheless, those droids couldn't harm their predecessor, and followed only HK-47 commands, so they shut down the "fat-one" instead. Why did the droids obey -47 and why didn't we get to see this scene? One simple answer: because it involved actions taken out at the HK factory, which Goto controlled, and which was completely cut out from the game."

Master Vash on Korriban - found by GrieverX and Darth Credulous

Darth Credulous: "Aha! AHA! It wasn't a lie! /kotor2/streamvoice/802/vash01/ 802vash01021- Master Vash talking about her Padawan, and the force link she shared with him: "The bond can be broken in many ways. If one falls to the Dark Side, the bond may fade and eventually break... this is why when gripped with fear, Kaa was unable to feel our bond. He assumed I was dead."

All this time it's been a puzzle as to how Kreia's force bond with the Exile mysteriously evaporated - and here's the answer! The old witch might not have been lying after all! If basic, necessary exposition like THIS is buried in the sound files, what on earth is still in there?"

Adding the content as a mod - Msxyz and Eji

Msxyz: "Why modders shouldn't be able to add content ? Most of the cutscenes in the game use standard animations. (walking, drawing a wapon or some other idle/filler animations). They could be reused as well. If there are all those voice files inside the folders, chances are that there are even scripts, maybe additional models and textures"

Eji: " I think some of those simpler cut scenes probably will be modded, but there's a couple that would either be tricky or impossible, like Atton's death scene. That scene requires what sounds like a different model altogether (heavily wounded, and if connected to the Sion scene his arm would have to be gone as well) and new animation, considering that he's described as being crumpled on the floor so his animations/interactions would need to be unique to that scene. To me it sounds like it's not so much as modding as it is programming from scratch.">

The audio clips:

These are audio clips people spliced together, some with music, so that we could get some idea of what the extra content would have been like:

HK-47/HK-50/HK-51 clips - posted by Camicortes

HK-47 finds out where the HK factory is located: listen (here's the mirror)

"There are some dialog lines too involving some training the HK units undertook in the facility, like victim torturing/interrogating techniques that are HILARIOUS (It includes a masoquist unit (here's the mirror) and a begging unit (here's the mirror)). HK-47 managed to enter the factory and destroyed the HK-50s with help from the new HK-51s. These last units question -47 about their purpose in the universe, and he answers in a most enjoyable way (here's the mirror)... "

HK-47 talks about his former companions - posted by Camicortes

"These lines also express some of HK-47 feelings towards its former party members... put them up just for fun :D Never thought Bastila could be sooo sexy hahaha" Listen to it here (here's the mirror).

Update by Shapeshifter (3/3/2005): "Just thought I'd let you know that this audio file is still in the game, it's not cut, and at least in the xbox version I have had him talk about it."

Atton cracks jokes - posted by camicortes

"Those lines just CRACKED ME UP!! It was obviously some content intended for X-box live users. But that are you an angel line.... now, seriously :D I dunno if it happens when you beat the game in both LS/DS mode, like someone mentioned." listen to them (the mirror)

Atton attacks Disciple - posted by Eji

"Ok! By popular demand, here is the Atton vs Disciple scene, mixed with music and an effect:"

Atton is tortured by Sion - posted by Eji

"Ok, got the Atton/Sion scene done. I have to admit, it was tougher than the others. Atton just didn't sound as pained as I would have expected, so I had to use a lot of creativity this time... lots more sound effects, and I actually used a track from the game instead of the SW movies this time, too. In a sense, it's much more of an Audio Mix than the previous ones."

Atton's death - posted by Eji

"I added some music to hopefully make it feel more appropriate, and tried to space out the dialogue for more dramatic effect. What do you think?"
