Well, well, well, if it isn't the Hour of the Witch update, strolling into my memory like a Mikaela Reid with a boon totem and a dream. It's 2026 now, and Dead by Daylight has seen more changes than I've had hot dinners, but Chapter 21.5 still holds a special place in my heart. Released way back on October 19 (I think it was 2021, but who's counting?), this mid-chapter update brought us the first new survivor in a while, and boy, did she shake up the meta. I remember firing up the game, eager to see what fresh hell the Entity had in store. And let me tell you, it was a doozy.

Meet Mikaela Reid: The Boon Witch

Mikaela Reid, the new survivor, wasn't just another pretty face with a flashlight. She came packing boons—totems you could bless to create areas of effect. I'll admit, I was skeptical at first. 'Great, another thing to worry about while I'm trying to not get hooked,' I thought. But then I saw the potential. Boons could heal, hide scratch marks, and even make generators go faster. It was like giving survivors a little slice of heaven in the middle of a nightmare. Of course, the killers weren't too happy about it, and the PTB (Public Test Build) was a wild west of experimentation. By the time the full release hit, the devs had already made some tweaks. Boon effects no longer stack, blessing a hex now takes 24 seconds, and the boon radius was reduced to 24 meters. Still, Mikaela made her mark, and I've lost count of how many times I've blessed a totem only to have it snuffed out by a grumpy Wraith.

Boon and Hex Changes: No More Stacking Shenanigans

The PTB to live changes were a mixed bag. On one hand, I loved that Hex: Blood Favor now activates on damage states and is based on the survivor's position—made it way more reliable. On the other hand, the boon nerfs hurt. No more stacking boons meant my dreams of a super-boon were dashed. But hey, balance is important, right? The developers also rewrote item and add-on descriptions, replacing vague terms like 'considerably' with actual numbers. Finally, I could stop guessing what 'considerably' meant. And they added reminder text for status effects, which was a nice touch for those of us who forget what 'Oblivious' does after a long hiatus.

Killer Tweaks: A Buff, A Nerf, and a Whole Lotta Add-Ons

The killer changes were extensive. The Trapper got a massive overhaul. Base trap carrying capacity increased to 2 (was 1), trap aura color changed from red to white, and the number of traps on a map is now always 6. Plus, a ton of add-ons were reworked or added. I still giggle at 'Bear Oil'—setting a trap silently? Yes please. 'Makeshift Wrap' means the Trapper can't be caught by his own traps, which is a relief for clumsy players like me. And 'Lengthened Jaws' inflicts Deep Wound—ouch.

The Wraith got a slight nerf: uncloaking speed boost duration reduced to 1 second (was 1.25). The Hillbilly got some love with add-ons like 'Death Engravings' and 'Doom Engravings' decreasing heat generation. The Nurse and The Shape had minor tweaks. The Hag? Nothing major. The Pig got a bunch of reworked add-ons, including 'Video Tape' which makes survivors start with Reverse Bear Traps—now that's terrifying.

The Spirit was reworked significantly. While phase walking, survivors within 24 meters hear a directional audio cue, which makes her less sneaky but more fair. She also got new add-ons like 'Mother's Glasses' and 'Uchiwa'. The Plague got changes to her Vile Purge and add-ons. The Deathslinger now has to wait for animations to complete before firing or attacking, but his aim movement speed increased to 85%. The Ghost Face's Night Shroud recovery time decreased to 24 seconds. The Blight got buffs to 'Adrenaline Vial' and 'Summoning Stone'. And The Oni and The Trickster? They got nothing. Poor guys.

Perk Overhaul: Renames and Rebalances

A bunch of perks became general perks with new names. Babysitter became Guardian, Camaraderie became Kinship, Second Wind became Renewal, Better Together became Situational Awareness, Fixated became Self-Aware, and Inner Strength became Inner Healing. On the killer side, Surge became Jolt, Mindbreaker became Fearmonger, and Cruel Limits became Claustrophobia.

Balancing changes were plentiful. Vigil now gives a 20/25/30% recovery bonus (was 10/15/20%). Guardian adds a 7% Haste effect for the rescued survivor. For the People reduced the Broken duration. Windows of Opportunity increased range and removed cooldown. Repressed Alliance reduced generator repair requirement. Built to Last was reworked to refill 99% of item charges after hiding in a locker. Any Means Necessary now lets you see dropped pallet auras. No Mither got buffs to grunts of pain reduction and recovery speed. Hex: Retribution now triggers from any totem interaction. Hex: Blood Favor now triggers off survivors losing a health state, with a 32-meter pallet blocking radius. Hex: The Third Seal triggers off basic and special attacks. Hex: Thrill of the Hunt now penalizes both Cleansing and Blessing, with higher stacks. Fearmonger now applies Exhausted and Blindness.

Quality of Life and Other Goodies

The hatch now only appears when one survivor is left alive—no more early hatch escapes! Survivors can open the hatch after it's been kicked shut using a key, which takes 2.5 seconds and doesn't lose progress when interrupted. The achievement 'Where Did They Go!?' became 'The Key to Escaping'. The Midnight Grove Halloween event started October 21st, and Tome IX of The Archives started October 20th. I spent way too many bloodpoints on that event.

Final Thoughts

Looking back in 2026, the Hour of the Witch update was a turning point. It introduced boons, shook up the meta, and gave us Mikaela Reid—a survivor who's still a fan favorite. Sure, some changes were controversial, and the Oni and Trickster got left in the dust, but overall, it was a solid update. I still play Dead by Daylight regularly, and I can't help but smile when I bless a totem and hear that familiar chime. Ah, memories. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date with a certain Trapper—and I'm bringing my key.
